[Isis-users] Issue of suddenly increasing the file size of N01

Dear Anusha,

I can confirm Piet's advice. I had the same problem just a week ago,
noticing the huge N01 file when a backup was taking much longer than usual.
It was a single corrupted record that caused the problem. When exporting the
database, the export stopped at the MFN before the bad record (for example
12356). By viewing the next MFN 12357, one could see that it was corrupted.
After checking that the following MFN was ok, I exported the rest of the
records from 12358 to the end (of course with a different filename of the
ISO file). Then I created an empty copy of the database and imported the two
exports. After a new indexing run, the N01 file was normal. I could then
also replace the corrupted record from an earlier backup of the database.
For cases like this, it is useful to keep some old backups.

We had another such case some years ago, when several records at different
places got corrupted and I had to export the data in six or seven batches to
restore the database. In that case, we could trace the cause of the bad
records to one networked computer where the SYSPAR.PAR parameter 14 was
wrongly set to single-user access. There can probably be other causes, but
you should better check on your network for that parameter if you have more
than one terminal with writing access.

Hi Anusha,

I have seen this a few years ago. Try to secure your data by exporting
them in small quantities (e.g. 1000 records a one time). You will crash
on some bad records in doing so; skip that section. After this you need
to start from a clean database. Import your data in that clean one. You
could also try to fix the XRF of the database using MSTRCV2
(downlaodable from the Unesco Isis utilities site).
