[Isis-users] ISIS: What can happen if you define two fields with the same tag in the FDT?

Here's a curious thing about Isis databases:

I recently stumbled over a Winisis database where the same numeric tags had
been used twice and even thrice, and for different purposes.

Creating the database with the fdt editor would have detected and rejected
the second and third duplicate tags, but probably the person who made the
database cloned it from another one and added fieds in a text editor
without knowing that duplicate tags are no-no.

I tried to replicate the case, and got the following results:

The worksheet editor shows and accepts all duplicate tags as different
fields.

Then I entered some (diferent) text under each duplicate tag.

Winisis treated each duplicate tag as a new field in the pft wizard, but
displayed the text entered in all duplicate tags as occurrences of the
single tag, i.e. in a tag used three times, I got three times the display
of all three occurrences!

The ALL format shows the duplicated tags as 3 occurrences of the same tag
only (obviously).

The Inverted file shows each tag only once, and treats the data entered as
occurrences of the single tag.

Interesting... But NOT TO BE RECOMMENDED!

Have a nice weekend

Wenke
