[Isis-users] Question about ABCD

The new OPAC will be, like all other modules, 'optional', i.e. ABCD is a modular system. It can live in ABCD with or without and along with the other modules (except for the basic configuration files).

As a module it could replace both iAH and part of the Site function, i.e. the (meta-)search.

The possibilities for libraries to create their own Site, as an environment with other links and functions (e.g. chat, alerts, Web2.0...) today are quite different, i.e. much more within reach of even smaller libraries with fewer resources, from what they were more than 10 years ago when ABCD was 'conceived'. But the ABCD Site (along with Site Admin) will continue to be available and maintained as long as reasonably possible. Our team is too limited in numbers to keep everything running forever. Anyway the Site module keeps working well and fully in both Windows and Linux, only the Site configuration in Windows needs to be done by manually editing configuration files.

For now we can only hope to be lucky with perhaps a new PHP/libxml version in Windows popping up and restoring all Site/Admin functionality. Then there will be again 'the embarrassment of choice' with two circulation modules and two OPAC's and meta-search sites in both Windows and Linux.

Edwin, thanks for the explanation.
I really imagine that it is difficult to maintain the project cross-platform with so many dependencies. Still it has worked very well!

So can we say that the new OPAC will replace the ABCD-site or will it be another optional ABCD module?

I had understood that the new OPAC would be an update to the current ABCD-site.

Soraya,

I came accross one issue - which seems almost impossible to tackle, I and several others made big efforts - which no longer works correctly in Windows : the Site Admin (the CMS to configure the ABCD Site).

Once the new OPAC, which takes a few functions over from the Site like e.g. Meta-Search over several databases, is available, the ABCD Site might be phased out without a real loss of functionalities. Many ABCD-users started replacing the Site or parts (e.g. the non-search frames) by own HTML creations, using available website production tools.

As far as I could find out the underlying reasons, it is related to different libxml libraries in Windows vs. Linux. Exactly the same Site Admin scripts in Linux still work perfectly in the same PHP-versions.

This shows how difficult it is to maintain a FOSS system based on many external software tools/libraries

Hello everyone!

If necessary, I would also like to help with the Portuguese translation.

One question: is it possible to know which functions will no longer work in Windows?

Thank you and stay well,

Edwin,

of course, you're already in our notebook for help with Portuguese translations, but thanks indeed.

Good morning colleagues

Hope all are doing well. I have a question about ABCD. I read an email few day ago explaining that a new version is on the way. I know during this time is hard.
This new version is going to be using MySQL?
We will have two versions: for windows and Linux?
Do you need help? If this is correct, what kind of help?? Programming, translation,

Thanks very much in advance
