I think your problem should be in your   /bases/abcd.def  file
there is a parameter that informs where is your mx located

for example

*VERSION=1.5 BETA
LEGEND1=2009  BIREME - Centro Latino Americano e do Caribe de Informação 
em Ciências da Saúde
LEGEND2=Prueba proyecto xxx
URL1=http://www.bireme.br
URL2=http://www.bireme.br
MXPATH=/home/xxx/cgi-bin*
